The Strength of Iron with the Hardness of Stone

 

QUESTION: My grandmother collected all sorts of odds and ends of antique china. Among all the pieces she had were a half dozen plates and jugs that had a special quality about them. She called them her stoneware and said they were probably from the early 19th century. Three of them had the name “Spode” on the back or bottom. Two were pure white with no decoration while the others had Chinese scenes painted on them. Can you tell me anything about them and when they would have been made?

ANSWER: The pieces your grandmother called “stoneware” are actually “ironstone,” a form of china with the look of porcelain. Ironstone china is a hard earthenware similar to porcelain. Although it has the hardness and fine surface of porcelain, it’s opaque while porcelain is transparent when held up to a light. 

Josiah Spode II first made ironstone in 1805. But before that, Miles Mason had been experimenting with a china formula that reproduced the appearance of Chinese porcelain. In 1813, Mason’s son, Charles, took out a patent, listing it as an improvement on ironstone china. Both Spode’s and Mason’s ironstone were equally fine. The blue-white color of both of their wares, as well as their patterns, were  imitations of Chinese wares.

Spode used his ironstone as a way to copy Lowestoft patterns. Lowestoft was a soft-paste porcelain produced in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, made from 1757 to 1802. It was mostly used for pots, teapots, and jugs, with shapes copied from silverwork or from Bow and Worcester porcelain. The English nobility had their initialed tableware made in China but getting replacements was a slow process, so they called upon English potters to make them.

While these pieces usually had no marks, they sometimes had the name “Spode” impressed in small letters on their bottoms. These patterns included crests and coats of arms and initials in shields with borders of small floral or leaf patterns or delicate ribbons.

One of Spode’s early ironstone patterns, commonly known as “Tree of Life,” is a design of the famille rose type, painted in blue, green, yellow, brown and pink. The mark appeared in black with the name “Spode” set on a rectangle of fretwork.

Patterns on Spode’s Lowestoft also included Queen Charlotte’s pattern, selected for Her Majesty’s visit to the Spode factory in 1817. Decorated in blue, it featured a butterfly border and a Chinese landscape in the center. It was a version of the old willow pattern that was popular on Chinese wares.

Though Spode copied many of his patterns from imported Chinese wares, he adapted others by making them more elaborate than their Chinese originals. Two types of old Chinese porcelain influenced Spode. The first was the old blue-and-white Nankin designs with pagoda and landscape and the butterfly border. The second was the famille rose design of the Yung Cheng period 1734. These patterns were in polychrome with gold and had floral and bird motifs. However, Spode didn’t use these patterns exclusively on his ironstone.

Spode marked the pattern numbers in red on his ironstone in addition to the factory mark. Lower numbers indicate an early production date, enabling pieces to be placed within certain years even if the exact date cannot be identified.

Eventually, Spode’s ironstone came in a variety of patterns. The Cabbage pattern featured a large leaf and flowers. Printed in blue, workers then filled it in by hand in blue, gold, rose, and Chinese red. Another early pattern, Peacock, features birds and peonies in gold and other colors in the famille rose style with a border known as India edge.

Landscape was Spode’s most Chinese looking pattern. It featured Chinese figures in blue and gold in the border with a landscape of water and buildings painted in colors in the center. Bang-up, first produced in polychrome, was a pattern of Chinese flowers. Ship and Star featured a pattern of a ship, buildings and figures set in a center cartouche and has a star border printed in brown.

The pattern known as George IV, was first made for the Coronation of George IV on July 29, 1821. The center of the plate has a design of Chinese still-life motifs with flowers and vases in blue, Chinese red, and gold with a heavy border.

The Mysterious Glow of Vaseline Glass

 


QUESTION: My aunt recently died and left me several things, including two beautiful twin yellow-green glass vases. I don’t know much about them but someone said they’re made of Vaseline glass. Does that mean they use Vaseline to make them? Can you tell me more about this beautiful glass?

ANSWER: No, your vases aren’t made of Vaseline. The most common color of this type of glass is pale yellowish-green, which in the 1930s led to the nickname "Vaseline glass" based on its resemblance to the appearance of Vaseline brand petroleum jelly as was formulated and commercially sold at that time. 

The addition of uranium dates back to Roman times. Professor R. T. Gunther of the University of Oxford discovered a piece of glass containing one percent uranium dating to 79 C.E. in an excavation of an imperial Roman villa on Cape Posillipo in the Bay of Naples, Italy in 1912.

Starting in the late Middle Ages, workers extracted pitchblende from the Habsburg silver mines in Joachimsthal, Bohemia. This was then used as a coloring agent in local glassmaking. Austrian druggist Franz Xaver Riedel experimented with pitchblende and obtained a yellow substance later identified as uranium dioxide. He added it to glass and became the first major producer of items made of yellow-green uranium glass, which he named "annagrün" (annagreen), in honor of his daughter Anna Maria. By the middle of the 19th century, this new coloring agent became popular in both Europe and America.

Vaseline glass is also called "uranium glass." This mineral added to glass is what makes it glow bright green under blacklight. The normal color of uranium glass ranges from yellow to green depending on the oxidation state and concentration of the metal ions, although this may be altered by the addition of other elements as glass colorants. That bit of uranium in the glass also makes it slightly radioactive.

With improvements in mass-produced, affordable glass, the popularity of vaseline glass rose. During the second half of the 19th century, interest in the glowing glass peaked. The fashionable glass was appealing both in sunlight and in the evenings. Victorian homes were lit by gaslight, kerosene or candles, which produced soft light-The human eye sees yellow-green most easily since it is in the center of the spectrum of colors, so under flickering light con. lit ions, the Vaseline glass seems to glow.

Large glass companies like Fenton Glass and Mosser Glass made vases, tableware, tooth-pick holders, clocks, whimsies, shoes, hats, parasols, inkwells,. compotes, and more in Vaseline glass..But between 1890 and 1910, the middle class became more interested in pottery and porcelain. With the development of Incandescent lighting, the steady light frequency made Vaseline glass appear plain.

The government confiscated all supplies of uranium during WWII for the Manhattan Project and halted all production of vaseline glass for from approximately 1942 until the ban was lifted in November 1958. From 1959 onward, glass companies began making vaseline glass again. However, because of the expense to obtain uranium dioxide, production was and is still very limited.

The Sparkle of Findlay Flint

 



QUESTION:
My mother loved collecting antique glass. She collected what she liked but didn’t pay too much attention to each piece’s history. I now have her collection and display it proudly. I’m trying to figure out exactly what I have. Some are readily identifiable but there are several that are puzzling. A friend told me they may be Findlay Flint glass. What can you tell me about this company? And what types of glassware did they produce?

ANSWER: While glassmakers like Heisey and Fenton are well known, there were plenty of others nestled in the Ohio River Valley. One of these was Findlay Flint Glass of Findlay, Ohio.  

Not a single glass factory remains in Findlay today. It was once home to 22 glass manufacturers, including five tableware companies, not all of whom were in production at the same time. But from 1889 to 1891, sixteen factories operated at once. The town boasted being the second largest glass producer in the country. Findlay's glass factories disappeared almost as quickly as they appeared, but in their brief existence, they produced hundreds of pressed glass patterns which are widely recognized and collected today.

It all started with the discovery of natural gas in the Findlay area in 1884. The rapid rise and fall of Findlay', glass industry was directly linked to the city's natural gas supply. But it wasn’t until 1886 before residents drilled wells to tap into the fuel source. The first was the great Karg well. A Geological Survey of Ohio in 1890 estimated it produced 14 million cubic feet of gas per day. Reports said gas escaping from the well could be heard as a roar five miles away.

City leaders believed they had an inexhaustible gas supply and lured industries to town with the promise of free or inexpensive gas. Glass companies in particular saw this as an incentive since they required a tremendous amount of heat. Multiple glass factories  soon sprang up, bringing thousands of new workers. Housing boomed and stores thrived in the gas boom town.

No one imagined that in just a few years, Findlay's gas would be in short supply, but only two years after drilling the Karg well, some local wells began failing.  By 1890 city officials saw trouble ahead. Fearing serious gas shortages, they urged glass companies to convert to other fuels. A few years later, the situation worsened. They had no choice  but to cut off the gas supply to industries in order to satisfy the needs of residents. Although a few glass companies remained for several years. Findlay’s shining moment in the glass industry abruptly ended.

The Findlay  Flint Glass Company was the last tableware factory to locate in Findlay. Organized mainly by local people, it opened in 1899 producing a full line of tableware and employed 192 workers.

Unfortunately, the company didn’t last long. Business had already slowed down by December 1890. And in 1891, city officials warned of possible gas shortages. The end came on June 6, 1891, when a midnight fire started in the shipping department and destroyed the factory. The owners had planned to rebuild the factory to produce glass bottles, but the intense heat of the fire ruined the limestone foundation so the factory was never rebuilt.

Even though Findlay Flint Glass produced glass for only about 22 months, it produced a large quantity of glass in several fine patterns. One of its major patterns was the Block and Double Bar which can sometimes be found with ruby flash. Though the company made its Pillar pattern midway through its production, it introduced Pattern No. 19 only a few months before the fire, making it extremely difficult to find today.

Stippled Forget-Me-Not, originally called Dot, was another popular pattern made in several colors including white milk glass and a fiery opalescent glass which are both difficult to find. Besides the regular tableware line, there were three baby plates with Stippled Forget-Me-Not borders. One featured a baby in the center, another had a cat, and the third had a stork.

Glassware for the Rich and Famous



QUESTION: My mother was extremely proud of her good glassware and china, which originally belonged to her mother. She would lovingly take it out of her china closet for each special holiday dinner. Boy, how those glasses did shine. I’ve always wondered about what type of glassware this was. My grandmother particularly liked cut glass, and these glasses—water goblets, wine, champagne, etc—had delicate floral designs cut into them. Some told me that they may have been made by the Seneca Glass Company, but I’m not sure. What can you tell me about this company and the glassware that they produced?


ANSWER: From the photo you sent, I can definitely tell you that your grandmother had fine taste, for these pieces are definitely by Seneca Glass. By the early 1920s, the company offered a new line of deep-etched glassware. Your grandmother’s pieces most likely were in this group.

In 1891, a group of immigrant glass artisans and businessmen from Germany's Black Forest region settled in Seneca, Ohio. Seeking to take advantage of the opportunities available in the American glass market, they purchased the former Fostoria Glass Company factory and established the Seneca Glass Company, named after the county where the factory stood and the local Indian tribe of the same name.

But the lure of cheap natural gas, free land, abundant quality glass sand within easy reach, and a city subsidy was too much to resist, so the owners moved the company to Morgantown, West Viriginia. in 1896. They kept the name and over time, the firm
developed a reputation for creating some of the finest lead crystal glassware available anywhere.

Embassies used it, Eleanor Roosevelt bought it, and Americans with finer taste and a pocketbook to match loved it. Seneca produced quality, delicate, mold-blown glassware in a wide variety of forms for the next 86 years. It became known for its striking cut glass patterns. Some of the patterns were so complex, they took an experienced cutter 12 hours to complete. Later years, company owners boasted that Seneca had more than1,000 cut glass patterns available.

Popularity grew quickly as the word got out in social circles. Large-scale retail stores all over the country began ordering Seneca products. Over the years, Seneca Glass received orders from B. Altman's and Tiffany's in New York, Marshall Fields and Company in Chicago, Neiman-Marcus in Dallas, the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Boston, and the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Philadelphia's highly regarded John Wanamaker Department Store, placed an order for 218 dozen glassware items, all cut with the crest of the president of Liberia which the company planed to sell him for his executive mansion.

Not to be outdone by private organizations and foreign powers, the U.S. State Department ordered Seneca crystal for 30 American embassies and consulates in 1944 and 1945.

While searching for glassware for a special occasion, Eleanor Roosevelt chose stems in an obsolete Seneca pattern, being sold at the reduced price of 25 cents each. These she chose over patterns offered by the store's staff from famous firms, expensive glassware items priced in excess of $50 a dozen. Mrs. Roosevelt used her bargain Seneca glassware at a State dinner held in honor of England's King George VI.

Mrs. Roosevelt wasn’t the last person associated with the White House to order Seneca glass. Ladybird Johnson purchased peach champagne glasses in Seneca’s Epicure pattern for Vice President Lyndon Johnson. Each glass had the vice president's initials, LBJ, and an Open Road Stetson hat, her husband's trademark headgear, etched on it.  Jacqueline Kennedy also used Seneca glassware in the White House.

Today, Seneca glassware is highly prized and actively sought by an ever-growing group of collectors with impeccable taste.

Seneca’s glassware was handmade and mold blown. Glass blowers produced such glassware by first gathering a small, molten blob of glass on the end of a hollow pipe or rod. By plowing through the pipe and manipulating it in certain ways, a glass worker would pre-shape the slowly cooling, glowing mass. The blower then inserted the pre-shaped "gather" into an iron mold—a mold that a skilled Seneca artisan had produced. Blowing into the pipe forced the hot glass to conform to the shape of the inside of the mold.

Depending on the specific object being produced, several operations could follow. For example, on stemware, the molding of the stem and foot might be done with forms and paddles or an intricate stem might be produced using a mold. Once the glass worker formed an item, he annealed or reheated it and allowed it to cool gradually and uniformly to avoid uneven cooling that would shatter the glass in an oven called a lehr. Other workers would then send the cooled object on for finishing, including the removal of excess glass, grinding and polishing.

One glass decorating technique, the “optic,” directly involved the shape of the interior of the mold itself. The interior of the mold could be shaped in panels, pillars, spirals, swags, and other interesting shapes. These shapes become part of the shape of the body of the glass formed in the optic mold. Seneca used this technique to create a variety of pleasing optics.

Seneca also produced wares decorated with needle and plate etchings and sandblasted decorations. Artisans also used other decorative techniques, including banding and metallic decorations. While elegantly cut lead crystal would be what came to consumers' minds first when they thought of Seneca glass, the company did offer a variety of colored glassware. The quantities of colorful glasses and tablewares available fluctuated over the decades, reflecting changes in public taste. Colored glassware would be offered in larger amounts during the later years, beginning around the 1960s.
   
Some of Seneca's specific glassware forms included goblets, sherbets or champagnes, cocktails, oyster cocktails, sherries, wine glasses, clarets, and cordial glasses classified as "stemware;" ice teas, hi-balls, old fashioneds, juices, and water glasses grouped as "tumblers;" along with a variety of decorative glassware" or "artware," including bowls, candle-holders, and vases.

Setting the Thanksgiving Table



QUESTION: As the holidays approach, I get out my Oneida silver flatware and polish it up for another joyous season. Beginning with Thanksgiving dinner, I use a setting for 12 that’s been in our family for four generations. Except for the classic beauty of this tableware, I know very little about it. Can you please tell me more about Oneida?

ANSWER: The holidays, especially Thanksgiving, are all about traditions in many families. Your use of your Oneida family heirloom is no exception. But Oneida didn’t always make silver flatware. In fact, at one point early in the company’s existence, it made grizzly bear traps.

Oneida, Ltd. actually began as a utopian religious commune in 1848. At that time, there were several such communities that existed in the northeastern United States. Oneida was one of them.

John Humphrey Noyes and his followers founded the Oneida Community in Oneida, New York. Members of this Protestant, religious sect referred to themselves as Perfectionists because they believed that spiritual perfection could be achieved by them in this world. This was a common concept among 19th-century utopian communities. Much like the Shakers, members contributed all their worldly goods to the community when they joined it. The community held all possessions in common, and it provided for everyone's needs. They called this practice "Bible communism.''

But the Oneida Community is best known for its unconventional family arrangements. Members practiced what Noyes called complex marriage—every man was married to every woman, just as every woman was married to every man. Although neighbors surrounding the community saw this as "free love,” the Perfectionists defended complex marriage as noble and unselfish, since all were expected to be loving to each other. It discouraged individual relationships. During its early years, the community also discouraged child bearing, but by 1869 when the community had become more prosperous, its elders selected couples with desirable qualities and encouraged them to bear children. John Humphrey Noyes himself fathered several, including sons who were later very active in the affairs of the future company. Oneida, Ltd.

At first the Perfectionists tried to support themselves by farming and by preserving and selling fruits and vegetables. But this didn’t provide sufficient income, so they branched out into several industrial activities. An 1890s ad offered a booklet which told how the community came to make such interesting and incongruous things as delicious preserved fruits and traps for catching grizzly bears, fine sewing and embroidery silk, d steel chains, and beautiful flatware. Let’s face it, not many silver companies started out making traps for grizzly bears.

By 1877, when the Wallingford, Connecticut, branch of the community started making tin-plated spoons, the original Oneida Community was beginning to break up. In 1879, Noyes moved to Canada and members abandoned the concept of complex marriage. In 1880, the assets of the community were distributed to its members in the form of stock in the newly formed corporation, Oneida Community, Limited, making it one of the earliest joint-stock companies in the United States.

The new company, under the leadership of P.B. Noyes, one of the sons of the founder, first moved its silverplate production to Niagara Falls, New York, and later to Sherill, New York, within walking distance of the original Oneida Community property. It began production of silver-plated flatware and hollow-ware in 1899 using the "Community Plate" mark.

When the community became a corporation, some members found it difficult to adjust to the new business practices and divided into factions, each competing to control the board of directors. But the younger Noyes remained in control and moved the company into manufacturing higher quality wares in sterling silver, including a flatware line called Avalon in 1901. In 1929, it purchased the William A. Rogers Company began producing a lower-quality line of products using that company’s mark. In 1935, the firm changed its name to Oneida, Ltd.

By 1961, Oneida, Ltd. began producing stainless steel flatware. And by the 1980s, Oneida made at least half of all flatware purchased in the United States. At the end of the 20th century, Oneida fell upon tough economic times, becoming the last remaining U.S.-based manufacturer of flatware, knives, forks, and spoons. The resulting economic troubles resulting from 9/11 forced it to close or sell off most of its factories.
It filled for bankruptcy in 2006, and after finally stabilizing, Monomoy Capital Partners, an equity fund based in New York City, acquired it. Today, it services much of the food service industry with both china and flatware.
