A Slide on the Ice

 

QUESTION: My father has been involved in curling since he was a teenager. Being of Scottish background, curling seems to be in his blood. Over time, he’s amassed quite a collection of curling memorabilia. And while I’m not as interested in participating in curling, I do love the idea of collecting its memorabilia. With all the recent attention that curling got from the recent Winter Olympics, how has the value of memorabilia been affected?

ANSWER: The key to smart collecting is discovering today’s sports-related souvenirs that could become tomorrow’s hot collectible. Spotting trends is the key, especially when a sport skyrockets to international acclaim as just happened with curling at the Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics

While most Americans aren’t familiar with curling, the widespread coverage of the sport at the recent games brought it to the forefront, along with the memorabilia that goes with it. Its colorful buttons, stylish pins and embroidered badges often appear at sports shows, flea markets and in online auctions.

Curling developed in 16th-century Scotland where it was played outdoors on frozen ponds or lochs. Simple equipment for the game included natural curling stones and primitive brooms. When slid across the ice by a player, the stone would quite often curve, or curl, as it traveled toward its target, a large bull’s eye. Players used brooms to brush snow and particles from the path of oncoming stones.

The first recorded evidence of the sport came from John McQuhin, a notary from Paisley, Scotland.  A challenge between a monk and a representative of the local Abbot took place on a frozen lake regarding throwing stones across its surface. Eventually, the first curling clubs formed. Curling spread across North America and Europe with Scottish immigrants.  In 1838, the Grand Caledonian Curling Club codified the first universal rules of curling.  Four years later, members demonstrated the game for Queen Victoria. She loved the game and allowed the club to use "Royal" in its official name, changing it to the Royal Caledonian Curling Club.

When Scottish immigrants came to America, they brought the sport of curling with them. It soon spread across Canada and the northern part of the United States. By the mid-19th century, curling clubs prospered in the states surrounding the Great Lakes and in New York City. The Victorians popularized the sport, and its popularity has grown even more today. 

The first official international competition for the sport occurred during the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France in 1924.  In 1932, the Olympic Committee downgraded curling to a demonstration sport.  On April 1, 1966, the formation of the International Curling Federation helped to further legitimize the game to once again gain an Olympic spot. Nearly 30 years later, on July 21, 1992, the International Olympic Committee finally gave full medal status to both men and women's curling. 

During the curling season which runs from October to March, it’s estimated that several million people play the game worldwide. In Canada, curling is the second most popular sport next to ice hockey. In the United States, it’s played in 25 states.

Although the game has undergone modernization with uniform equipment, sleek uniforms, and modern facilities with refrigerated ice, the traditions of good will and fair play continue. Curlers play to win but never to humble their opponents. A true curler would rather lose than win unfairly.

The spirit of camaraderie is what attracts many players to curling. At the close of tournaments, known as bonspiels, curlers often exchange their club buttons, embroidered badges, or pins for coveted like pieces from opposing team members. Each club’s piece is unique in size, shape, color and design.

In fact, many curlers also collect the sport’s hats, sweaters, and ephemera-related items. Each button, badge, or pin elicits lasting memories.

So what is this sport all about? Two teams of four players make up the game. The players are respectively lead, second, third and skip. Each player slides round stones across the ice. The stones are concave on the bottom and have a handle on the top. They are slid toward a fixed mark in the center of a circle, called a house. The circle is marked with concentric bands. The object of the game is to slide the heavy granite stones closest to the center. 


Each player delivers two stones alternately with his opponent, beginning with the lead of each team and ending with the skip, who is also the team captain. One point is awarded for each stone that comes to rest nearer the tee than does any rival stone. A team can score up to 8 points with the 16 stones delivered in an end, or inning, unless no stone is in the house or the nearest opposing stones are equidistant, in which case there’s no score. Important strategies of the sport include blocking and knocking out an opponent's stones.

A distinctive part of curling is the use of a corn broom, or brush, by the partners of the deliverer to sweep the ice in the path of the oncoming stone. This is a tradition carried over from the days when people played curling on frozen lakes. It was necessary to clear the snow to provide a path for the oncoming stone. Curlers still sweep today to remove stray ice particles and smooth the surface of the ice, thus assuring the stone a longer ride. 

Prior to the 1950s, most curling brooms were similar to household brooms. In 1958, Fern Marchessault of Montreal inverted the corn straw in the center of the broom. This style of corn broom was referred to as the Blackjack. Today, brushes have replaced traditional corn brooms at every level of curling.

A curler also uses a brush for balance during delivery of the stone and by the skip to indicate where the curler should aim. The ice is meticulously groomed to keep it completely level. Prior to a competition, a member of the ice maintenance crew sprays a mist of water on to the ice to create a pebbled surface that helps guide the stones. Each stone weighs an average of 40 pounds and cannot exceed 44 pounds. Its circumference cannot be more than 36 inches. The minimum height is 4½  inches.

Pins for curling events in different Olympics have saturated the collectibles market and are easy to find. However, curling pins aren’t limited to the Olympics.  Pins from other curling competitions are also popular with players and collectors.  Because of the sport's popularity in Europe, European and specifically Scottish pins are some of the most common. Canadian curling pins are also fairly easy to find.

Popular curling collectibles also include personalized curling ornaments and novelty items like curling stone keychains and coasters. Additionally, collectors value unique memorabilia such as custom curling signs and miniature curling stones.

Antique curling stones are another popular item. The oldest stones hail from Scotland.  These can be more difficult to identify as curling stones often have no trademark or logo. An antique curling stone can cost as much as a new one.

The value of curling collectibles can vary widely based on rarity, condition, and demand. Values have increased significantly in the last 25 years. Items like vintage pins and memorabilia from significant events can fetch from $10 to $30 each while unique curling stones can sell for $50 to $150 for vintage ones to $200 to $700 for those from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. A new 2026 Milan Winter Olympics Curling Pin is selling for $10 to $20.

The Smallest Olympic Souvenirs

 




QUESTION: In 1996, I attended the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. During the games, I acquired about 100 Olympic pins through purchase and trading. Can you tell me how the tradition of collecting pins began and what the market is like for Olympic pins today?

ANSWER: You certainly seemed to have amassed quite a number of pins during the Atlanta Games. Today, pins come in all shapes, colors, and sizes and represent a myriad of people, activities, and events at the Games. With the start of the Summer Olympics in Paris this week, it seems appropriate to take a look back and see how pin collecting began.

Pin collecting has become a sport unto itself. But it wasn’t always like that. The Olympic pin tradition began with small cardboard badges worn by athletes and officials at the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Athletes from competing teams traded them as a gesture of goodwill. At the 1908 Games in Paris, designs of pins grew as specific groups like judges, coaches, and reporters got involved. 

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued the first pins to be sold to spectators at the 1912 Games in Stockholm, Sweden. Today, the pins created for the 1940 games,  cancelled because of World War II, are highly sought after by collectors.

In 1968, the Mexico City games featured the first butterfly-clutch pin fastener, which  became the standard for Olympic pins. But it wasn’t until the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, California, that trading pins became a tradition. Sponsoring companies, such as Coca-Cola, set up official trading stations to market their own pins. Because the pins were small and affordable, fans quickly seized the opportunity to bring home keepsakes for themselves. At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, some 17 million pins circulated among fans, participants, media representatives, and officials.

Pins began as a pre-social media form of communication that gave fans a reason to start a conversation with each other. The individual country Olympic committees, sponsors, bid cities, media outlets, and many others issue these colorful enameled pins today. Hundreds of thousands appear at each of the Games. 

Pins are generally manufactured in limited numbered editions, and collectors seek out those produced in the smallest quantities or from the earliest Games. These also include pins issued by the various cities competing for a chance to host the Olympics. 

Some of the most popular ones to collect are those from the smaller countries, such as Bahamas, Senegal, and Lebanon. At the games, fans pin those they’ve collected onto a hat or the strap holding their Olympic credentials. As one fan walks by another, they look at each others’ pins and often one will ask where the other got a particular pin. From there, it’s onto trading and acquiring more pins. As the Games continue, fans try to either gather as many pins as possible or become selective as to the type of pins they want to collect.

The unwritten rule has always been to trade like pins for like pins. Of course, rules are meant to be broken and that’s the fun of it all. At the last Olympic Summer Games, fans were on the lookout for pins from Tokyo, the city to host the next Summer Games. At this Olympics, they’ll be on the lookout for pins from Los Angeles.

Somewhere in the host city, pin collectors representing pin collecting clubs from all over the world congregate to trade pins and stories. It won’t be any different in Paris. Also, hundreds of vendors set up tables to sell pins of every design and origin. Most of these cost about $5 each, so amassing a lot of them can cost a small fortune. The majority of people, however, acquire their pins by trading ones they have for ones they want. 

Some collectors have over 30,000 pins in their collections. They’re always on the lookout for pins from the 1936 Berlin Games, a hot commodity in the pin collecting realm. 

While it may seem that the only people trading pins are fans and athletes, everyone involved with the Olympics, from the members of the IOC to newspaper reporters, volunteers, judges, and coaches, all get involved.

It used to be that all a person you needed to do to begin collecting pins was to show up at the Olympics, find some pins and start trading. But today, beginning collectors can find thousands of pins online and while the fun of trading may not be there, the ability to collect just about any pin, even the important ones, is there—for a price.

Pin collecting is affordable and don’t take up much room, so they’re ideal for anyone just starting out in collectibles. Searching the Internet for  “Olympic collectibles” will undoubtedly result in links for collecting pins.

Captivating Cameos


QUESTION: A few years ago, I went on a trip to Italy. While traveling along the Amalfi Coast south of Rome on my way to visit the ruins of Pompeii, I discovered shop after shop filled with beautiful cameos. I bought several and would love to buy more. What can you tell me about the origins of cameos, and how can I tell if cameos are genuine? 

ANSWER: Cameos have been collectible since the Renaissance in the 15th century when wealthy women collected them as status symbols. Today, elderly Italian master carvers are retiring, causing an escalation in the prices for finely carved cameos. Plus, new laser-cut cameos from China have been flooding the market. It’s now a buyer-beware market where only an expert is able to discern a really good cameo.

A cameo is a form of carved bas-relief, which features portraits, landscapes, and mythological figures cut into a variety of materials, but most often into gemstones and shells. Artisans, both ancient and modern, have crafted cameos from two layers of one piece of material, the top of which protrudes from the background, creating a multi-dimensional artwork. Throughout history, these detailed reliefs have adorned pieces of jewelry, such as brooches, necklaces, bracelets, and rings. But the earliest cameo carvers took their inspiration from prehistoric petroglyphs, which documented important religious and symbolic imagery onto rock faces.

Cameos first appeared as far back as 15,000 BCE. where ancient Egyptian civilizations carved figures into rocks to record important events. Cameo artistry traveled between the ancient Mediterranean cultures through trade routes connecting Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and often depicted mythological themes while paying tribute to gods and goddesses. As the Roman Empire grew, cameo carvers began to incorporate political portraits into their pieces. Wealthy people could afford to buy the expensive gemstone cameos, while less wealthy ones bought glass cameos.

During the reign of Alexander the Great in the 3rd century B.C.E., Greek and Roman cameos incorporated religious figures and mythological images. Also during this time, specifically in the Hellenistic era, women wore cameos to display their willingness to engage in the act of lovemaking. By the 15th century, cameos produced in Italy began to differ from the ancient ones.

In the 18th century, wealthier women began wearing impressively carved gemstone cameos as a sign of wealth and prestige. Carvers soon realized they could use Plaster of Paris molds to recreate cameos from notable collections. Scottish gem engraver and modeler James Tassie began using molds of these famous cameos to recreate glass pastes that could pass as authentic, carved jewels.

Carvers realized just how easily they could replicate expensive jewels. They discovered the use of Cornelian shells, which were soft, durable, and easy to carve. Queen Victoria popularized shelled cameos, featuring natural and humanistic scenes carved onto deep-sea shells. Meanwhile, as interest in collecting cameos grew, French military leader Napoleon  He brought carvers from all over Europe into France to create cameo jewelry for both men and women. He even commissioned furniture to be designed with cameos carved out of precious gemstones like opal, sapphire, and garnet.

A new type of cameo made from lava rock also appeared during this time. Colored lava extracted from an archaeological dig at Pompeii proved useful for highly detailed carvings. Women often purchased lava cameos as mementos from their travels on their Grand Tours, which established the objects as a symbol of status and wealth.

Over the centuries, artisans have created cameos by carving figures in bas relief from precious gemstones such as onyx or agate, one of the most commonly used. The most common motif of antique cameo jewelry depicted a profile of a face or mythical creature. Whether ancient or modern, cameos typically have two colored layers—figures  carved in one layer raised on the background of the second layer. Today, workers in “cameo factories” carve cheap imitations in paste glass or in seashells. The best shells come from the coast of Africa. The shell, itself, has no value. It’s the quality of the carving that gives a shell cameo value.

The rareness of a cameo outweighs its age when determining its value. For example, though the Roman Empire predated the Renaissance era, experts consider Renaissance cameos more valuable as there were fewer produced back then.

It’s important to examine a cameo by holding it up to a light to ensure there are no major cracks. Those that have three or four layers of color and a metamorphic image, which includes several subjects, are particularly valuable. Further, colored stones like opal, lapis, and emerald are rare, so they’re even more expensive.

When purchasing a cameo, it’s necessary to use a magnifying glass to look on the inside of the rim of the setting for the gold value and for sharper cuts or fewer details. A signature makes it more valuable, but collectors seek some signatures more than others. Unfortunately, it takes an expert to find the signature of a laser-cut cameo. It’s easy for a novice collector to be fooled into buying them at greatly inflated prices.

Two sought-after designs are “The Three Graces,” a scene of three full figures in flowing garb. The other is “Rebecca at the Well,” a theme that usually includes a full figure of a woman, a cottage or a well, and often a bridge. Both are late 19th-century favorites.

Cameos made of gemstones are generally more valuable than those made of shell. But the medium isn’t as important as the quality of the carving.  Graceful, smooth-flowing lines with much detail are signs of a good one. The inferior ones seem to have sharper lines, fewer details, and a harsh look.

Scenic cameos, on the other hand, are generally pricier than bust cameos. A very popular motif around 1860 was what is known as ‘Rebecca at the Well.’ There are many variations on this theme, but they usually include a cottage, a bridge, and a girl.

Prices for cameos continue to rise, making them a good investment. One with a small bust or portrait might sell for $30 to $400 if well carved. Prices for larger scenes and unusual themes or with sought-after signatures may begin at $500 or $600 and go up from there.

Collectors often find smaller cameos at antique shows or shops for $100 to $150. But for those prices, experienced collectors don’t expect top quality. These cameos may be less expensive for several reasons. First, they usually have less detailed settings. Second, they’re usually smaller and unsigned. And third, they have been carved more recently and less artistically.

QUESTION: I live in Atlanta, Georgia, and attended some of the events at the Olympic Games held here in 1996. During the games, I acquired about 100 Olympic pins through purchase and trading. An Israeli Olympic pin in the shape of a guitar from the Atlanta Games is today selling for $18 online. And while that same pin sells for a variety of prices, that’s not a bad return on investment. So let the pin games begin!
