Mysterious Mauchline Ware

 

QUESTION: As I browse the booths of antique shows in my area, I’ve come upon small ochre-colored wooden boxes in various shapes with a black printed image of a historical landmark, most of which seem to be from America. The prices of these little boxes are through the roof. What are these items, and why are they so pricey?

ANSWER: What you’ve been seeing is known as Mauchline (pronounced Moch’lin) Ware, a form of souvenir ware made by the Smith family of Mauchline, Ayrshire, now Strathclyde, Scotland, and favored by affluent Victorians traveling abroad.

Adorned with transfer ware scenes of landmarks, this Scottish wooden ware dates from about 1880 to 1900. Though the Smiths sold it throughout the United Kingdom, they also exported to North America, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and elsewhere.

Mauchline, located 11 miles inland from the Scottish coastal resort of Ayr, was the center of the Mauchline Ware industry, which at its peak in the 1860s, employed over 400 people in the manufacture of small, but beautifully made and invariably useful wooden souvenirs and gift ware. Because of the contribution its originators, W. & A. Smith of Mauchline, the majority of souvenirs produced in southwest Scotland from the early 19th-century to the 1930s has come to be commonly known as "Mauchline Ware."

Mauchline Ware developed partly by accident and partly through necessity. Towards the end of the 18th century in the town of Alyth, Perthshire (now Tayside), a man named John Sandy invented the "hidden hinge" snuff box. His invention eventually spread to at least 50 other Scottish snuff box manufacturers in the early 1820s, most of them in Ayrshire, including William and Andrew Smith of Mauchline. 

With so many manufacturers, snuff box production continued at an all-time high, but the habit of taking snuff was on its way out. Although they made mostly snuff boxes, manufacturers like W.& A. Smith also produced other items, from postage stamp boxes to tea trays, all out of wood. The first of the new products were tea caddies utilizing the hidden hinge. In fact, they were so highly prized that when a female employee got married, the Smith’s Box Works gave her one of their tea caddies as a present.

Over the next century, the Smiths of Mauchline and their competitors produced tens of thousands of articles in hundreds of styles and in several different finishes. They generally used sycamore wood, which has a very close grain and a pleasing color. The precise date of the first transfer wares isn’t known, but companies manufactured them from the early 1850s until 1933.

Woodworkers created more items with transfer decoration than any other finish. These were true souvenir wares, since they decorated each piece with a view associated with the place of purchase.

Skilled craftsman applied transfers to the finished articles prior to coating them with several layers of slow drying copal varnish. This process took from 6 to 12 weeks to complete, although it seems that they must of developed an accelerated means of varnishing to cope with the sheer scale of production. However, this lengthy and careful process of manufacture accounted for the extreme durability of these products, many of which have survived in near mint condition.

As with earlier hand-decorated snuff boxes, manufacturers used sycamore wood, known as "plane" in Scotland, its pale color making an excellent background for the black transfers. While the majority of Mauchline Ware items were small, thus warranting only a single transfer, it was by no means unusual for craftsmen to apply six or more transfers to some of the larger pieces. Where they applied more than one transfer, the Smiths related views to one another, either by subject or geography.


Views of Scotland dominated the transfer ware. "Burnsian" views, by far, formed the largest single grouping and views associated with Sir Walter Scott probably the second. In addition to virtually every town and village, producers immortalized a great number of beauty spots, country houses, churches, schools, ruins and even cottage hospitals in transfer ware. Other views included seaside resorts and the inland spa towns of Malvern, Cheltenham, Chester, Bath and Harrogate, which became increasingly accessible to a growing number of people as result of the rapidly expanding rail network. The Isle of Wight was particularly popular, probably due to Victoria's love of the place. And the popular south and east coast resorts--Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings, Margate and Scarborough--saw their share.

From the 1830s on, makers produced a steadily decreasing number of snuff boxes while producing an increasing array of needlework, stationery, domestic and cosmetic items as well as articles for personal decoration and amusement. In addition, companies created an incredible range of boxes in every conceivable size and shape and for limitless purposes.

A great many cotton, thread and ribbon manufacturers—J & P Coates, Chadwicks, Clarks Glenfield, Kerr and Medlock—purchased Mauchline Ware containers for their products, their names clearly yet discreetly displayed either inside the lid or on the base. Thus, manufacturers transformed rather mundane accessories into attractive gifts.

Producers also turned out novelty inkwells, pens, pencils, pencil boxes and letter openers, as well as many designs of bookmarks including a patented combined bookmark and paper cutter.

And it’s because of Mauchline Ware’s uniqueness that prices for it have risen to such high levels.

More Than Roses, Apples, and Ivy

 

QUESTION:  My mother was living by herself and, as she was getting older, decided to move into a retirement community. So she needed to downsize. She gave me quite a few pieces of mid 20th-century, solid colored dinnerware that looked a lot like Fiesta Ware. But the pieces had a stamp on the back that said “Franciscan Ware.” I’ve always liked these dishes and would love to find pieces to make up a complete set. What can you tell me about Franciscan Ware? Is it possible to find additional pieces?

ANSWER: The dishes your mother gave you were the first pattern of Franciscan dinnerware, called El Patio, designed by Mary K. Grant in 1934. First introduced by Gladding, McBean and Company, it was available in six solid colors, accompanied by mixing bowls and casserole dishes.

For the next 50 years, Gladding, McBean and Company produced nearly 150 patterns of colorful dinnerware, kitchenware, and decorative pieces of earthenware in Glendale, California. The most popular patterns in the Franciscan line—known as Apple, Desert Rose, and Ivy— featured embossed, hand-painted designs created in the 1940s.

The name 'Franciscan^ was a tribute to the Franciscan Friars who had established missions in California in the 17th century. In 1936, the company changed the name of the line from Franciscan Pottery to Franciscan Ware to convey a sense of quality..

Glassing, McBean produced its Franciscan ware in three distinct types of body material. The first was "malinite,^ a cream-colored durable earthenware. Next high quality vitrified china wares, known as Masterpiece China in 1940 and Franciscan China in 1942.  And lastly, the firm also made Franciscan Ware in a whitestone ware, a white earthenware first used by Gladding, McBean in 1959.

Just as Franciscan body materials came in three categories, so did the patterns used to decorate them. The three were solid-color patterns, embossed, hand-painted patterns, and decided patterns, some of which came in either a glossy or a matt glaze Potters based the earlier patterns on Mexican and early American designs.

Solid-color patterns generally come in a single color, although the company also produced two-tone ones. The very first Franciscan dinnerware, El Patio, made from 1934 to 1953, came in 20 different solid colors and over 103 shapes. Cups and bowl handles had a distinctive, pretzel-like shape. A short-lived variation on this pattern, El Patio Nuevo, was manufactured in a two-tone pattern from 1935 to 1936. The interiors  and exteriors of all pieces came in different solid colors.

Another well known solid-color pattern produced around 1936 was Coronado, finished  in satin, matt, and glossy glazes. Also called Swirl for the swirling, spiraling shape molded into the pottery.

Gladding McBean's designer Morris Sanders created the Metropolitan pattern, originally produced in Ivory, Ivory and Coral, Ivory and Grey, and Ivory and Turquoise satin finish colors. for a New York industrial design exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In color combinations, potters used Ivory for lids and handles and as a liner. They also made Plum and Chocolate Brown patterns, each with Ivory liners. All of the vessel forms in Metropolitan were either square or rectangular.

The embossed, hand-painted patterns had decorative shapes embossed into the pieces. Decorators then hand-painted these raised shapes prior to glazing. Among these were the most beautiful and sought-after Franciscan patterns, including Apple, Desert Rose, and Ivy. The producers of both the Donna Reed and I Love Lucy T.V. shows used Apple and Desert Rose on their sets.

Introduced on January 1, 1940, Apple was Gladding, McBean’s first embossed, hand-painted pattern. It was popular for its bright red fruit, sturdy brown branches. By early 1942, Desert Rose, a pattern with pink wild roses, light brown thorny branches and green leaves, also became popular. Gladding, McBean then applied the Desert Rose pattern to previously existing vessel shapes. The finials on the lids, shaped like rose buds, were distinctive.

The company introduced Ivy in 1948, rounding out the trio of most popular Franciscan patterns. Ivy was originally offered with 27 shapes. Gladding, McBean added additional vessel shapes, including comports, a covered butter dish, a 12-ounce mug, a relish dish with three sections, a side salad, sherbet dishes and a TV tray, in the 1950s.

Besides its three main patterns, the firm produced decaled patterns—underglazed transfer printed patterns produced from the late 1930s right on through to the 1980s. The most popular of these patterns was the Starburst pattern. Introduced in 1954, Starburst featured large and small blue and yellow dots through which black lines radiated. The Eclipse vessel shape upon which Starburst appears was also distinctive.

Because of the volume of pieces produced by Gladding, McBean and Company, it’s possible to find many of them online at eBay and other sellers of antiques and collectibles.

Fish, Lizards, and Snakes---Oh My

 


QUESTION: I’ve had a ceramic plate with fish in relief swimming on it. I originally bought it at an antique show because I liked the funky decoration. I’m not necessarily a collector, although I have some antiques. I’ve never seen a plate like this since. Can you tell me anything about it?

ANSWER: I believe what you have is a piece of French Palissy ware from the 19th century.  Palissy ware usually depicts realistically colored, aquatic landscapes teeming with stalking lizards, swimming fish and slithering snakes amid a rich variety of luxuriant foliage.

Named after the great French, 161h-century, Renaissance potter, Bernard Palissy, who referred to his works as rustique, meaning “in the rustic style.” developed a distinctive style of earthenware. In creating naturalistic scenes of plants and animals and finishing them off with polychrome glazes inspired by nature. He called his three-dimensional creations of lifelike flora and fauna “Art of the Earth” and “rustique,” and they came to be known as “rustique figurines.” Recognizing his talent, the queen of France, Catherine de Medici, brought Palissy to Paris and bestowed upon him the title “The King’s Inventor of Rustic Figurines.”

Palissy wares were so realistic that the creatures he depicted seem ready to hop, slither, or crawl from whatever piece on which they lay. He sculpted each scale on a snake, each rib in a fish’s fin, each vein running through a leaf. He often cast each creature from master molds created from the creatures themselves. The wares often exhibit extraordinary detail and complexity. Although we may see closely matched pairs of urns, vases, or platters, subtle differences in glazing, placements and textures, assure each piece is unique.

The use of many individual molds for components means creating Palissy style wares is far more complicated than many other ceramics. Each piece can take as long as 10 to 15 days over a period of two to three months to complete because of drying time. Artists use individual molds to create each element, which then becomes part of the composition. 

It wasn’t until 250 years after his death in 1590, that French ceramist,Charles-Jean Avisseau from Tours, rediscovered Palissy’s lost secrets and started a revivalist movement lasting 50 years.

Avisseau joined a Tours pottery where he learned the art of ceramics, painting and sculpture. In 1825 he was hired to supervise the ceramic works of Baron de Besenval.

Once. during a visit to the Baron’s home, Avisseau was shown a ceramic piece attributed to Bernard Palissy and became so enraptured by its brilliant enamel and delicate workmanship that he decided to devote his life to the rediscovery of Palissy's secrets-For more than 15 years, he researched the chemistry and fusion of leaded enamels to recreate and then surpass the work of "Master Bernard:' After he exhibited his work at the Great Universal Exhibition of London in 1851 as well as in the 1849 and 1855 Exhibitions in Paris, his fame grew.

Avisseau created clocks, fountains, dishes, candle-sticks. fish baskets and mirror frames, all sought by wealthy collectors, statesmen, aristocrats and museum curators. 

Even though he became successful at producing Palissy ware, Avisseau shared his knowledge willingly with other ceramists. 

Joseph Landais, who was himself a skilled potter, left his family while quite young to work in an earthenware factory. In 1843, he joined Avisseau's workshop for a few months, then established his own shop, claiming that he, not Avisseau, had rediscovered Palissy's secrets. The feud continued throughout Avisseau's life. Landais also exhibited his works at the 1851 Great Universal Exhibition of London, at which he received a meritorious award. He produced a variety of vases, platters, plates, pitchers, mirrors, urns, as well as some monumental works.

Leon Brard painted marine still lifes. He experimented with different clays and glazes during his 10 years in Paris, producing a variety of plates, plaques and platters. In 1859, Brard met Avisseau during a visit to Tours, moved there, and became a frequent visitor to the master's workshop while employed at a local pottery. Two years later, Brard opened his own shop. With an artistic and original style, he became known for his trompe l'oeil works on white faience surrounded by a cobalt blue border in the style of Rouen. At first glance, these works appear to be an artful presentation of fresh fish as might be served in the restaurant.

 reputation encouraged other ceramists to emulate his works. Victor Barbizet established a pottery workshop in 1845 to produce ordinary household ceramics and later Palissy ware. Around 1850, Victor and his son, Achille, moved to Paris and began to mass-produce Palissy ware. Over a period of about 30 years, the firm became very successful, employing approximately 60 workers at its peak.

However, the best known ceramist to follow the Palissy ware tradition was Alfred Renoleau, who lived and worked in and near the town of Angouleme in western France. His factory flourished for nearly 40 years and employed up to 40 workers. 

And like Avisseau, he marveled at the works of Palissy which he saw during a  visit to a decorative arts exhibition in Bordeaux. At night the young Renoleau practiced making ceramics using a homemade kiln in the attic of his house. Later, he persuaded his father to let. him work for one year in a nearby pottery, and promised to return if the craft disappointed him. Needless to say, he didn’t return home. He often signed his earlier pieces “Falder,” an anagram of his first name. In 1889, he moved to nearby Roumazieres at the Polakowski and Company factory where he produced some of his finest work. In 1891,he opened a small factory in Angouleme, but later moved to larger quarters.

While these ceramists made Palissy ware with the same type of clay and glazes as other forms of majolica, Palissy ware usually features darker colors and a more varied palette of brilliant enamels. Palissy ware is best distinguished from other majolica ware by its subject matter of fish, snakes and lizards recreated in realistically depicted pond life_

Because Palissy ware was decorative and non-utilitarian, pieces have survived in extraordinary condition. Unlike Victorian majolica which was made in production quantities, Palissy ware is unique. In most cases an artist working made his pieces alone, with no two being identical. Palissy ware hasn’t been produced for over a century.

Some ceramists marked their Palissy ware while others did not, and some marked their wares sometimes, but not always. Many scratched their signatures or monograms on to their pieces.

The pricing for 19th-century French Palissy ware runs from a few hundred dollars to several thousand or mare. Small works ranging from 2 to 3 inches generally run between $150 and $300 depending on condition and maker. Small pieces include goblets, cache pots, and bud vases. Larger versions, measuring about six inches, often sell for double. Medium size plates measuring 8 to l0 inches in diameter by such ceramists as Barbizet often sell for $1,000 to $2,500. And platters ranging in size from 12 to 18 inches can sell for $2,500 to $5,000. 

Finding Palissy ware is easier in France than in the United States, however, U.S. antique dealers who specialize in majolica often carry it.

Having a Little Fun



QUESTION: My mother loved to collect pottery odds and ends. Just about every week she’d stop at the Thrift Store in town and find something or other. One of the quirkiest pieces she found was a cup and saucer with an abstract design painted on it in bright colors. The stamp on the bottom says it’s by Clarice Cliff. I never heard of this artist. Is she American? Was this a type of novelty pottery? Please tell me what you can about her and her work.

ANSWER: Clarice Cliff was an English ceramic artist who created works from1922 to 1963. She began working in the pottery industry when she was just 13. She first gilded pieces, adding gold lines on traditional wares. Once she mastered this she learned freehand painting at another pottery while studying art and sculpture at the Burslem School of Art in the evenings.



Cliff was ambitious and acquired skills in modeling figurines and vases, gilding, keeping pattern books and hand painting ware, including outlining, enameling, and banding while working as an apprentice. In the early 1920s the decorating manager Jack Walker brought Cliff to the attention of one of the pottery’s owners, Colley Shorter, who offered Cliff an apprenticeship.

By 1925, she had begun modeling stylized figures, people, ducks, as well as floral embossed Davenport ware. But in 1929 at the same time as she started the colorful cubist and landscape designs, Cliff's modeling took on a new style, influenced by European Art Deco designers Désny, Tétard Freres, Josef Hoffmann and others, that she had seen in design journals.

A.J. Wilkinson’s gave her a second apprenticeship in 1924 where she worked primarily as a “modeler” on conservative, Victorian-style ware,. Eventually, the owners of Wilkinson’s recognized her wide range of skills and, in 1927 gave her own studio at the adjoining Newport Pottery which they bought in 1920. Here, she decorated some of the old defective “ghost,” or white ware in her own freehand patterns. For these she used on-glaze enamel colors which enabled a brighter palette than underglaze colors.

Cliff creatively covered the imperfections in the pieces in simple patterns of triangles, in a style that she called “Bizarre.” The earliest examples had just a hand-painted mark,  usually in a rust colored paint—“Bizarre by Clarice Cliff,” sometimes with “Newport Pottery” added underneath. To everyone’s surprise, it was an immediate hit. Soon, a young painter named Gladys Scarlett began helping her with the ware. Soon the company produced a more professional “backstamp,” which displayed Cliff's facsimile signature and proclaimed "Hand painted Bizarre by Clarice Cliff, Newport Pottery England." Bizarre became an umbrella name for her entire pattern range. The pottery referred to the first pieces Cliff produced as “Original Bizarre.”

In March 1927, Colley Shorter, one of the pottery’s owners, sent Cliff to the Royal College of Art in Kensington, London, to study in March and May.



After her studies at the Royal College of Art, Cliff’s shapes from 1929 onwards had a more Art Deco influence, often angular and geometric. Abstract and cubist patterns appeared on these shapes, such as the 1929 Ravel on Cliff's Conical-shaped ware, which was an abstract leaf and flower pattern named after the composer. Ravel was another of Cliff's Bizarre shape ideas which became popular in the 1930s.

In 1928 Clarice produced a simple, hand painted pattern of Crocus flowers in orange, blue and purple, each flower being constructed with confident upward strokes. Then green leaves were added by holding the piece upside down and painting thin lines amongst the flowers. Being made from the individual brushstrokes, the Crocus pattern was clearly completely hand-painted, and the vibrant colours instantly attracted large sales.

Crocus was unusual in that it was produced on both tableware, tea and coffeeware, and 'fancies', novelty items made primarily as gift ware. The pattern had many colour variations, including Purple Crocus (1932) Blue Crocus (1935), Sungleam Crocus (1935) Spring Crocus. It was even produced after the war, the final pieces with Clarice Cliff marks being made in 1963, though Midwinter (who bought the factory) continued to paint it to order until as late as 1968.

By 1929, Cliff's team of decorators had grown to 70 young painters, mostly women which she nicknamed her “Bizarre girls.”



Clarice Cliff’s visually explosive designs of the 1920s and '30s—her defining period of creativity according to many collectors—were never exported from her Staffordshire-based studios to the United States. However, it’s Americans, including a number of celebrities, who are among the most competitive buyers of her way-out wares. Further outrageous patterns, vividly colored, such as Melon and Circle Tree appeared in 1930.

"Having a little fun at my work does not make me any less of an artist, and people who appreciate truly beautiful and original creations in pottery are not frightened by innocent tomfoolery," said Cliff in an interview.

The Beauty of Doulton Burslem Ware



QUESTION: I recently came across several pieces of what a dealer called Doulton Burslem Ware at an antique show. I have never heard of this type of pottery, even though I have several pieces made by Royal Doulton in my collection. Were these pieces specially made? Did Doulton make them in a separate factory. Where did the name Burslem come from?

ANSWER: Over its history, Royal Doulton made a variety of types of ceramics, including pottery and porcelain. Its Burslem line featured its finest porcelains.

John Doulton began his working life as a potter’s apprentice at Dwight’s Pottery in Fulham, England. In 1815, he went into business for himself in Lambeth, partnering with a journeyman names John Watts and a widow named Martha Jones. After Martha Jones left the partnership in 1820, John Doulton changed the company’s  name to Doulton & Watts. The business specialized in making stoneware articles, including decorative bottles and salt glaze sewer pipes. The firm took the name Doulton & Company in 1853 after the retirement of John Watts.

His son, Henry, joined his father in 1835 at age 15. He quickly mastered the technique of throwing large vessels. Legend has it that he once made 15 3-gallon filter cases before breakfast. To celebrate his coming of age in 1841, Henry made and fired a 300-gallon chemical jar. His father was so proud of him he displayed it with a sign reading, "The largest stoneware vessel in the world."

Not only did Henry have skill in making pottery, but he was a big thinker and attuned to the artistic tastes of the public. By 1871, Henry Doulton launched a studio at the Lambeth pottery, offering work to designers and artists from the nearby Lambeth School of Art.  In 1877 Henry bought out Pinder, Bourne and Company, a pottery located in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. This placed him in the region known as The Potteries. Five years later he changed the name to Doulton and Company.

Henry fostered an artistic environment that encouraged individual expression, and  soon his workers made some of the most beautiful porcelains of the time. Not only did he hire women, but handicapped artists as well.

Henry was given the Albert Medal by the Royal Society of Arts in 1885 and was knighted in 1887 because of his contributions to the artistic life of England. In the late 1800s anyone who wanted to be in style owned Doulton items.

Sir Henry held off displaying the new Burslem porcelains at exhibitions until he was confident that he could show his competitors the best of his artists were cap-able of producing. At the Chicago Exhibition in 1893 he felt the public was ready for the new range. Large vases, including one which was 6 feet high, were modeled by Charles Noke' and painted by Charles Labarre, who had come to Doulton's from Sevres in France. Other items exhibited were floral painted dessert services and fish and game sets. The Doulton Works took seven of the highest awards, the most given to any ceramic firm.

Doulton's factory at Burslem produced a tremendous amount of tableware and beautifully decorated items, such as vases, ewers and plaques, all of high quality porcelain. It took the work of many skilled craftsman and women to accomplish this.

Notable artists such as Percy Curock, Daniel Dewsbury, Edward Raby, George White and, of course, Charles Noke experimented with glazes, including Changware, Chinese Jade, Sung, and Flambe'.

The Art Nouveau movement influenced many of Doulton’s artists in the late 19th century. In 1889, when Doulton recruited Charles Noke' from the Worcester factory as its chief modeler, many of his earliest pieces featured Oriental-style dragons in high relief. Vases and ewers had gilded dragon handles or molded dragons crawling up the sides. Dragons became an important part of Noke's work, especially when he began experimenting with the Chinese rouge flambe glazes in the early 1900s.

By this time Doulton had become known for its stoneware and ceramics, under the artistic direction of John Slater, who worked with figurines, vases, character jugs, and decorative pieces designed by the prolific Leslie Harradine. Doulton products came to the attention of the Royal family. In 1901 King Edward VII sold the Burslem factory the Royal Warrant, allowing the business to adopt new markings and a new name, Royal Doulton. The company added products during the first half of the 20th century while manufacturing fashionable and high-quality bone china.

Early Doulton artists frequently used nature as their theme, befitting the Art Nouveau style. Flowers were a very popular subject, usually done in muted colors outlined in gold. They also used animals, especially farm animals such as cows and goats, to decorate vases and other items, many with hand-painted landscapes.

In the first few years of the Burslem factory, some unique, very fragile pieces were made with colorful applied seashells or flowers, vines and leaves in an effort to duplicate some of the Amphora pieces made in Austria during that time. Some of these pieces are still in existence today and are eagerly sought by collectors.



During the late 19th century, when the Burslem craftsmen were producing their wares, many competing potters from the Worcester, Royal Bonn and Rudolstadt factories were also producing similar pieces. All of them employed the Spanish Ware technique—the  painting of very fine raised 22-karat gold outline traceries of flowers and leaves, combined with on-glaze enamel painting, often on an ivory or vellum ground. Many pieces had elaborate gilded scroll handles and three or four feet. Some rare pieces even had sections of reticulation.

Many of the cups and saucers from tea, coffee and chocolate services were very delicate in nature and also painted in muted colors using flowers as a theme. Much use of gold was used to decorate the cups and saucers, not only to outline the flowers, but the handle and trim were almost always done in gold. Doulton did a series called Blue Iris. The majority of the pieces in this line used blue flowers on a cream background, embellished by much gold tracery.

Heraldic Mementos



QUESTION: On a recent trip to England, I came across some small ceramic objects with heraldic crests on them. At first I thought that they were family crests, but upon closer examination, I realized each piece, along with its crest, came from a different English town. I bought several of these “souvenirs” to take home as mementos of my trip. I’d really like to collect them but know nothing about them. Can you tell me how old these pieces might be and if it would be possible to collect them since I live in the U.S.?

ANSWER:  Heraldic souvenirs have become very popular with collectors in recent years, and not just those on the other side of the pond. While you may have to look a bit harder for them over here, you will find them, especially because you can purchase them directly from British sellers online.

These heraldic souvenirs became popular as a result of a tremendous expansion in travel during the second half of the 19th century. This occurred partly because of the rise in incomes which allowed more people to afford to travel and the greatly improved technology in rail and steamer transportation. The latter became so affordable that just about anyone could travel around the country. As more people traveled, the demand for attractive mementos skyrocketed.

William Henry Goss was the first manufacturer to produce heraldic souvenirs. In fact, many manufacturers made them over 70 years, much to the joy of traveling Victorians.

Goss met W.F. Copeland, one of the owners of the Copeland Spode China Factory. Copeland hired him as a clerk in his London warehouse in 1852, and the following year Goss moved to the factory headquarters at Stoke in Staffordshire. By 1857 he had become the chief modeler for the company.

It was the modelers who designed the originals or models of all of the various pottery and porcelain objects that Goss manufactured, ranging from simple utilitarian ware like plates to elaborate ornamental ware such as portrait busts. In 1858, Goss left Copeland and soon had established his own company which produced common ceramic objects for the next 20 years, including terra cotta ware and Parian portrait busts.


The innovation that was to make the firm famous came in the early 1880s. Goss produced small replicas of objects associated with particular places and placed on them the local coat of arms. Wealthy families had been ordering hand-decorated sets of china with the family arms on them for quite some time, so armorial ware wasn’t something new. What was so novel about Goss’ pieces was that he made them inexpensively for ordinary people.

Goss was always particular about the design standards of his wares, and he thoroughly researched both the original historical artifact of each model and the coat of arms it was to bear.  He used armorial reference books to insure that the crests were authenti. Goss also used his Parian porcelain formula for his crested ware, permitting very elaborate sculptural qualities and also making it possible to keep pieces eggshell thin.

To keep standards high, Goss wanted to have only one object sold as a souvenir for any particular place, and also to sell that object solely in the place whose crest it carried. To insure that there was no "cheating" by retailers, the firm had only one agent in each town and required that the agent sell Goss ware and nothing else. Soon Goss made a variety of objects available to local agents, although for a time the crest still had to be that of the place where they were to be sold. If a person wanted an object with the arms of, say, Chester, he or she had to travel there to purchase it.

The production process was rather straight forward. First, a modeler sculpted the model for each object in clay. Then another worker made a plaster-of-paris mold of it. This process often damaged the original model beyond repair. Yet another worker cast a duplicate of the original mold, and used this piece, called the block, to make the master mold which, in turn, he used to produce working models from which the working molds could be made.

Goss used plaster of paris for molds because it absorbed water fast. A worker would pour clay that had been mixed with water to the consistency of cream, called slip, into a mold. Soon, the slip in contact with the mold would dry, and then he would pour the remainder off, creating a very thin clay piece. Each mold lasted for several hundred castings, although toward the end of its life the detail wouldn’t have been as sharp.

Kiln workers fired the "green" ware at about 1200 degrees Celsius. Then, the piece moved to the glazers who would paint the piece and fire it again at a slightly lower temperature. After this second firing, another employee would apply the printed transfer of a particular coat of arms or other decoration and send the piece to be fired again.

Finally, decorators added the color by hand, and again the piece would be fired for the last time. If the piece were to be gilted, it would undergo one more round of hand-decoration and firing. Despite the complexity of the process, the cost to the purchaser was still modest—about several dollars in today's money).

The heraldic souvenir craze peaked World War I. By the 1920s, these common trinkets were beginning to seem old-fashioned. 

Goss’ firm made these souvenirs in a wide variety of shapes, eventually producing hundreds with a myriad of different coats of arms, making the number of possible variations run into the thousands. You could collect these souvenirs for years and still continue to find new and interesting pieces.
